First part. The Saint, his people.
This documentary tells the life story of Saint Ubaldo Baldassini and his relationship with his townsmen in the period of fierce internal struggles between the free communes that were born a short time before. The emperor saw that his power was being belittled by the development and the expansion of the cities which had assumed regulations and laws on their own; thus, he was trying to hinder it with everything in his power.
Saint Ubaldo deeply lived the events of that bloody time, always standing up in defence of Gubbio and working to make peace between fighting factions. Unfortunately, sometimes he was misunderstood by Gubbbio's very people.
Second part. European Saint.
After an introductory part dedicated to the commemorations made when Ubaldo died, to Ubaldo's cult, and to some aspects of the Festa dei Ceri, the video points out the European value of the Saint's figure. The city of Thann is emblematic as far as this aspect is concerned. It is an Alsazian city and it is there that Saint Thiébaut (as Saint Ubaldo is known there) has been venerated for more than eight centuries, inside the marvellous gothic collegiate church.
The video goes over the events, half history half legend, through which his cult spread over France , Switzerland and Germany , and it shows the festivities in his honour that are held every year on June 30 th at Thann. The final part of the documentary emphasizes the words of John Paul II who defined saint Ubaldo: “Saint of peace and reconciliation”. |
